Metro Detroit foodies know one of the best treats in the area are milkshakes piled high with goodies. Instagram-worthy desserts are all the rage right now and local shops are doing their best to stand out from the crowd. But one place has been doing it bigger and better than most since 2015. M Street Baking Co. opened its doors in Howell seven years ago and people still flock in droves to try their tasty milkshake masterpieces.
Upon walking into their Howell location, you’ll notice they’re more than just a milkshake shop. M Street Baking Co. is also known for incredible custom cakes, baked goods, and savory items such as pizza rolls and pickle pitas in addition to their milkshakes. Honestly, everything is worth a try and you will definitely leave with a full and happy stomach.
In June 2021, the doors opened at Shakes by M Street Baking Co. on the first floor of Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi. This location primarily serves up milkshakes along with some of the baked goods selections from the Howell location such as cake pops and macarons.
Currently, M Street offers a milkshake menu of five varieties that change seasonally as well as at least one featured shake that changes approximately every other week. Each milkshake is made-to-order with hand-dipped ice cream and then topped with incredible additions like cupcakes, cotton candy, or an entire ice cream sandwich.
While chatting with Liz Wood, Director of Operations for M Street Baking Co., about how they come up with so many creative milkshake combinations, she said, “It is truly a group effort when we come up with our milkshake flavors! We have a lot of creative people that work for us that give ideas for shakes. We also travel all over the country trying to get inspired by different desserts and foods to come up with different shake flavors and toppings.”
Right now, M Street’s milkshake offerings feature four different Girl Scout-inspired shakes: Tagalong, Thin Mint, Trefoil, and Samoa. Each one is complete with a sprinkle-rimmed cup, whipped cream, and entire Girl Scout cookies on top. These are definitely not to be missed and won’t be around much longer.
But what exactly makes an M Street milkshake so much better than other places? Wood says, “They offer a variety of different desserts on top of a delicious hand-dipped ice cream milkshake. All of our toppings are made in our bakery, such as cookies and brownies and topped with some of our favorite brands like OREO!”
